PROVENANCE AND ETHICS

Patagonia was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, the company's roots are in clothing for rock and alpine climbing, but they now produce a diverse mix of apparel targeted towards skiers, snowboarders, surfers and climbers. Patagonia are a world leader in creating ethical, sustainable clothing.

Recycled Polyester: Polyester is a naturally water-repellent material that can withstand the elements. Using polyester fibre made from mechanically recycled plastic bottles reduces CO2 emissions, and Patagonia are working toward eliminating all virgin polyester in their products by 2025.

NetPlus: To help reduce plastic pollution, Patagonia are finding new ways to turn previously discarded forms of plastic, like fishing nets, into clothes that can be worn for generations. Their partner Bureo collects and transforms these nets from local fishers off the coast of South America - which helps protect wildlife, provide fishing communities with extra income, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels used to make plastic.

Made without PFCs / PFAS: For decades, the coatings used in apparel to improve water-repellency have relied on per- or polyfluorinated chemicals, which contain fluorine. This class of forever chemicals accumulates in air, water, food, even our bodies, and they raise serious health concerns. Patagonia re moving away from PFCs, and now 92% of their materials with water-repellent chemistries are made without them - reducing their impact on the health of people and the planet.
